What a Leaking AC Drain Line Looks Like

What to know

Water by the air handler is a warning, not a diagnosis. Turn the system off if water is spreading and call before damage grows.

Cooling removes moisture from the air, and that water has to leave through a drain. When the line clogs or the pan overflows, the first visible symptom may be a ceiling stain, wet floor, safety switch, or system that suddenly stops.

If water is spreading, shut the system off at the thermostat and protect the area underneath it. Do not keep restarting equipment that has tripped a drain safety without checking why.

A service visit should clear the blockage, inspect the pan and fittings, confirm the drain path, and check whether the system is producing unusual amounts of moisture because of another issue.
